Prior coming to Radford, Whitt taught in Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky.  From 1911-1921, he was Superintendent of Schools in Radford.  When Radford College was founded in 1913, he taught some of the classes offered.  In 1920 and 1921, Whitt studied at Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee, and returned to Radford College as registrar in 1921.
