Dr. McConnell was born in Scott County, Virginia.  Prior to serving as Radford's first president, he was dean and professor of history and economics of Emory and Henry College.  Dr. McConnell was a strong advocate for higher education of women; and it is appropriate that the McConnell Library be named after him.
