June 4, 2007 marked the 75th anniversary of the library building and of the name McConnell Library.

NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK -- APRIL 13-19, 2008
Monday, April 14th
* 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.: It's time for another Game Night!
Join us in the Radford Room for Scrabble®, Wordigo®, and other games
with great snack food and prizes!
Tuesday, April 15th
* All day: Play a guessing game at the Circulation Desk!
The winner will take home a jar of candy and a beautiful print of the library.
Wednesday, April 16th
* All day: Pick up your official library swag
* 7:30 p.m.: Join us in the Radford Room for the Awards Reading for the
Thomas Coleman Undergraduate Writing Contest,
the Scott Christianson Essay Contest,
and the Nan Lacy Poetry Chapbook Competition.
This program is co-sponsored by the Library,
the English Department, and the Creative Writing Committee.
Thursday, April 17th
* 6:00 p.m.: Step on over and watch the National Pan-Hellenic Council's Step Show!
The show will be held outside in front of the library. (In case of rain, the program will be moved indoors.)
Friday, April 18th
* All day: Do you know your library? Enter our trivia contest at the Circulation Desk.
The winner will receive an MP3 player and a beautiful print of McConnell Library.
STRESS BUSTER -- APRIL 21-25, 2008
Need a break from studying?
Spend some time in the Radford Room and enjoy a relaxing atmosphere,
comfy couches, bead crafts, board games, and puzzles.
The room will be open Monday-Friday, April 21-25.

McConnell Day - February 21, 2008
Our second-annual McConnell Day celebration was held on the day before Dr. John Preston McConnell's birthday. At 12:15, David Horton (RU's Coordinator of Student Activities) presented an entertaining and informative program on life in Radford in 1932. Throughout the day, patrons were invited to guess how many gummy bookworms were packed into a jar (click here for a photo).That evening, our second monthly Game Night took place in the Radford Room (more Scrabble ®, snacks, and prizes!).

The Radford Room was turned into an oasis of soft music, refreshing snacks and beverages, and games and crafts -- all for patrons who were in need of a break before exams.
Glow - October 9, 2007, 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.; Level 4
Through video, song, and speech, RU alumnus Slash Coleman told the story of his days at college with his friend Mark Jamison, and how, years later, he came to terms with Jamison's untimely death. More information is available at www.slashcoleman.com.

Radford College's library was previously housed in the Administration Building, which stood on the current site of Muse Hall. |
In 1932, construction was completed on a new library building, and students were enlisted to help move the library's collection to the new site. |

The new library was named for Dr. John Preston McConnell, Radford's first president. |
McConnell Library in 1934. At this time, the library consisted of only two floors. |

McConnell Library was expanded in 1967 and again in 1994. |
